Office of Evangelism Support
~ Matthew 16:24
At the heart of evangelism is the call to Go & Grow—to spread the Gospel and disciple believers in alignment with the Great Commission. Evangelism is not an option; it is a divine mandate given to all believers. The foundation of our mission is found in Acts 1:8 and Matthew 28:18-20, where Jesus both empowers and commands us to be His witnesses.
Understanding Acts 1:8 and Matthew 28:18-20
In Acts 1:8, Jesus promises that we will receive power from the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses:
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
This verse highlights that evangelism begins with the power of the Holy Spirit. We are not called to spread the Gospel in our own strength but through divine empowerment that enables us to reach people locally (“Jerusalem”), regionally (“Judaea and Samaria”), and globally (“uttermost part of the earth”).
Matthew 28:18-20, often called the Great Commission, gives us our direct command from Jesus:
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things
whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
This passage clarifies our responsibility—to go, teach, baptize, and disciple. While Acts 1:8 shows that the Holy Spirit gives us the power to be witnesses, Matthew 28:18-20 tells us what to do with that power: share the Gospel and help others grow in their faith.
These scriptures work together because one gives us the ability, and the other gives us the assignment. Jesus empowers us through the Holy Spirit, and then He commands us to go make disciples.
5 Steps to Share Your Faith
Share Your Testimony
Scripture:
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony…” (Revelation 12:11)
Explanation:
Your personal journey can be a powerful witness. When you share the story of how you encountered Christ, the transformation you experienced, and how your
life has changed, you open a door for others to see God’s work in a relatable way. A genuine testimony often resonates because it speaks to real struggles and the hope found in faith.
Relevant Story:
Consider the experience of Mark, who had been struggling with feelings of emptiness and uncertainty. One day, during a difficult season, he listened to a friend share how God had rescued them from despair. Inspired, Mark began to seek God earnestly, eventually experiencing a profound transformation. Today, Mark shares his testimony at community gatherings, encouraging others who feel lost to explore the hope and renewal that faith in Christ brings.
Demonstrate God’s Love Through Acts of Service
Scripture:
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)
Explanation:
Actions often speak louder than words. When you serve others—whether through volunteering, helping a neighbor, or simply being there for someone in need—you reflect the love of Christ. Acts of service not only address immediate
needs but also open conversations about the source of that compassion and care.
Relevant Story:
Sarah, a dedicated volunteer at a local shelter, regularly spent her weekends serving meals to those in need. One day, a resident named John, who had lost all hope, approached her out of curiosity about her unwavering kindness. Through their ongoing interactions, Sarah gently shared about the love of Christ that inspired her actions. Over time, John began attending a community service project with her, and eventually, he embraced the faith that had transformed Sarah’s life.
3. Invite Others to Worship and Fellowship
Scripture:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19)
Explanation:
Inviting friends, neighbors, or colleagues to a church service or a community event can be an inviting way to share the gospel. The environment of worship and fellowship offers a tangible experience of God’s presence, and often, seeing believers come together in unity and love can spark curiosity and interest.
Relevant Story:
During his college years, James noticed that one of his friends, Alex, often expressed a sense of disconnection and disillusionment. Recognizing an opportunity to share the hope he had found, James invited Alex to a vibrant youth service at his church. Although hesitant at first, Alex eventually attended and was moved by the genuine love, support, and community he encountered. This simple invitation set Alex on a journey toward exploring faith, and today he is an active participant in his local church community.
4. Engage in Bible Study and Scripture Sharing
Scripture:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
Explanation:
Scripture offers both wisdom and comfort, and sharing Bible verses can be a gentle, inviting way to discuss faith. Whether it’s through a one-on-one Bible study, a small group discussion, or even sharing a verse on social media, introducing others to God’s word can spark deeper spiritual conversations and understanding.
Relevant Story:
Emma, who always found guidance in Bible verses during challenging times, once met a neighbor at a local café who was struggling with personal loss. Sensing the opportunity, Emma shared a few verses that had brought her solace,
explaining how God’s promises had helped her through dark days. The neighbor was touched by this simple act and later joined Emma for a weekly Bible study. Their regular sessions not only deepened their understanding of Scripture but also nurtured a lasting friendship rooted in shared faith.
5. Engage in Meaningful Conversations About Faith
Scripture:
“But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being
prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for
the hope that is in you.” (1 Peter 3:15)
Explanation:
Many people have questions about life’s purpose, suffering, or the existence of God. Engaging in thoughtful, respectful conversations allows you to share your understanding of the gospel and how it applies to everyday life. Listening attentively and answering with empathy can bridge gaps and create opportunities for others to explore their own beliefs.
Relevant Story:
At work, Daniel noticed a colleague, Lisa, often expressed curiosity about his calm demeanor despite the pressures of a hectic environment. When Lisa finally asked him about the source of his peace, Daniel shared how his faith in Christ provided him with hope and direction even during turbulent times. This open dialogue not only deepened their mutual respect but also led Lisa to attend a church service with Daniel, where she began to explore the teachings of the Bible in greater depth.
Each of these approaches—whether sharing your personal story, serving others, inviting people to worship, exploring Scripture together, or engaging in genuine conversation—can be effective avenues for sharing your faith. The key is authenticity: allow your actions and words to reflect the love and hope that your faith brings to your life, inviting others to discover that same transformative grace.
A Word of Encouragement
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”— 1 Corinthians 15:58 (KJV)
As ambassadors for Christ, never grow weary in spreading the Gospel. Every seed sown, every soul reached, and every act of obedience in evangelism is building the Kingdom of God. Your labor is not in vain! Stay faithful, remain steadfast, and trust that God will bring the increase.
